The Kindergarten Opens!

Posted by: Scott In: Post-Rally

As most of you that have been following our journey know, we undertook the Mongol Rally in part to raise donations to assist with the construction and outfitting of a kindergarten in (very) rural Bulgan Province, Mongolia. While preparing for the trip we had numerous events, fundraisers, and auctions as well as donations from friends and family to help out with this task. To accomplish this we worked together with my Rotary Club, West Bloomfield Michigan (District 6380), the Bayanzurkh 100 Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (District 3450), and Prison Fellowship International, Mongolia (as most of the children attending the school are the sons and daughters of the nearby prison staff).

After I finally arrived in Mongolia in September I was anxious to visit the construction site and see how everything was going. Unfortunately I was not able to due to various constraints (it was a 16 hour trip over dirt roads via minibus just to get there). more info

Well, I just returned from a month long trip to Thailand to some good news: the kindergarten construction finished successfully and opened up on Christmas Eve day.

Below are pictures from the inaugural ceremony.

Lovely to see the happy faces on both the children and parents. Great to see this combined effort paying plenty of fruits. My wife and I hope to back in Ulaanbaatar by August 2010 for another long term stay in Mongolia. This kindy will make a big difference to all involved.

There isn’t really a town there, thus the lack of a school. It is located near a prison in Bulgan Province, NW of UB.
